What are Community Cats and why dothey need our help?

A community cat is an unowned, free-roaming domestic cat that lives outdoors. These cats may be feral or friendly strays. They are generally not suited for indoor life but are often cared for by community members through programs like TVNR. Once returned to their outdoor homes, they can control rodent populations and live healthy lives.

Characteristics

Unowned & Outdoor: They live outdoors and don’t belong to a specific owner, though people often provide food and shelter.

Feral or Stray: They can be unsocialized (feral) or lost/abandoned pets (strays), but both are considered community cats.

Colony Life: They often form social groups called colonies in familiar outdoor spots.

Not Always Suitable for Adoption: Because they’re not socialized to humans, many don’t typically thrive as indoor pets and are at high risk in shelters.

Why They Matter

They are a natural part of many environments, helping control rodent issues. Community cat programs offer a way to manage their populations humanely, preventing overpopulation and improving community coexistence.
